We all know those guys – the sports-obsessed, narcissistic, toxically masculine meatheads, vain in what they want, who they are. It’s Lad Culture. After playing the song all over the world, from colleges and clubs in the US, to festivals and pubs in Ireland and the UK, Nashville’s multinational rock outfit Wild Love has their say on Lad Culture in their cheeky, feel-good indie rock banger “Vanity”.
“The lyrics just kind of poured out, somewhere from the subconscious I guess, and I had to find the meaning in it after writing,” says Wild Love’s Irish-born-and-raised lead singer Brandon Gorman. “For me, it’s about Lad Culture: sports guys, meatheads, toxic masculinity, how vain they are in how they look and who they want to look at.” Growing up in Ireland playing football and GAA he had a front-row seat to Lad Culture. “It’s narcissistic; they don’t care about personality, only looks.”
Gorman says the song is written from the perspective of the person who is on the receiving end of this vain behavior. “Yet they still want their attention, and they recognize their own vanity and their own internal conflict with it.” But he recognizes that the song can be interpreted differently. “I think that while that’s my specific take on it, it’s written open-ended enough to let it take on multiple interpretations. Whatever the listener sees in it is cool.”
